Loose skin after weight loss: what actually helps

Loose skin after weight loss: what actually helps

Transformare Bellezza, October 2026

Loose skin after weight loss happens when your skin doesn't shrink back as quickly as the weight comes off. How much loose skin you have depends mostly on how much weight you lost, how quickly, and how long the weight was there. Building muscle, eating well, protecting your skin from the sun and not smoking all support your skin. For mild sagging, radiofrequency treatments like Venus Legacy can firm the skin without surgery. Large folds of excess skin are usually treated surgically.

"Losing the weight is obviously the goal, but that doesn't necessarily mean someone is going to love how their skin looks as the weight comes off. Loose skin, changes in texture and cellulite can become more noticeable." Danielle DeLuca, MA

Why does skin get loose after weight loss?

After substantial weight loss, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons explains, the skin and tissues often lack the elasticity to conform to the smaller body.

A medically reviewed article from INTEGRIS Health lists the main factors:

  • How much weight you lost and how long the weight was there. These are generally the strongest predictors of excess skin.
  • How quickly you lost it. Dropping sizes very quickly gives your body little time to adapt.
  • Age and genetics, which play a major role in how well skin bounces back.
  • Sun exposure, which can reduce collagen and elastin in the skin.
  • Smoking, which lowers skin's resilience and increases collagen breakdown.

Does fast weight loss on GLP-1 medications make it worse?

Speed matters. As one plastic surgeon told the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, "The faster a patient loses weight, the thinner and less resilient the skin may be." Plastic surgeons have also reported more patients asking about loose skin after large weight losses on GLP-1 medications, most often on the arms, abdomen and thighs.

That doesn't mean you should avoid losing weight. It means your skin may need some support along the way.

What helps your skin while you lose weight

These habits come from the INTEGRIS Health guidance:

  • Lose weight gradually where you can. A slower pace gives your skin and tissues more time to adjust. If you're on a weight loss program, talk with your provider about pace as well as the number on the scale.
  • Strength train. Lifting weights replaces lost fat with dense muscle, so the area looks firmer.
  • Eat a nutrient-rich diet. Good nutrition supports muscle growth and tissue repair.
  • Stay hydrated, which helps your skin look its best.
  • Wear sunscreen and don't smoke. Both protect the collagen and elastin you're counting on.

Non-surgical skin tightening with radiofrequency

INTEGRIS Health describes radiofrequency (RF) treatments as relatively painless. They use heat to increase collagen production and work best for minor sagging.

At Transformare Bellezza, our body radiofrequency treatment of choice is Venus Legacy. It combines radiofrequency energy, pulsed electromagnetic fields and vacuum suction in one handpiece. The RF gently heats the deeper layers of skin to activate collagen and elastin, the pulsed fields boost circulation, and the suction helps drive the energy deeper. Most clients say it feels like a warm stone massage, and there's no downtime.

What a Venus Legacy plan looks like

  • A course of 6 to 8 weekly sessions.
  • Abdomen sessions typically run 30 to 40 minutes. Face and neck sessions are shorter.
  • Maintenance every 3 to 6 months after your course.
  • Treatment areas: abdomen, arms, legs, face and neck.

Venus Legacy also improves the appearance of cellulite, which can become more noticeable as weight comes off. Learn more about our cellulite treatment and skin tightening during and after weight loss.

Can you start while you're still losing weight?

Yes. Danielle recommends Venus Legacy for clients who are actively losing weight and whose main concern is loose skin:

"If someone is actively losing weight and their main concern is loose or lax skin, Venus Legacy is something I would be more likely to recommend. Someone may be doing incredibly well with their weight loss but still want to work on tightening their stomach, arms, thighs or another area as their body changes." Danielle DeLuca, MA

Venus Legacy or Laser Lipo?

They serve different purposes. Here's how Danielle explains the difference between our body treatments:

  • Overall weight: Weight loss injections
  • Stubborn pockets of fat and inches: Laser Lipo with radiofrequency
  • Loose skin, skin tightening and cellulite: Venus Legacy
  • Fluid retention and puffiness: Lymphatic drainage
"Laser Lipo would make more sense when the concern is a stubborn pocket of fat or inches that someone wants to target. Venus would make more sense when the primary concern is loose skin, skin tightening or cellulite. Sometimes someone may benefit from a combination, but it depends completely on their body and their goals." Danielle DeLuca, MA

When is surgery the better answer?

Radiofrequency works best for mild sagging. Large folds of excess skin after major weight loss are usually treated surgically, with procedures such as a tummy tuck or arm and thigh lifts. INTEGRIS Health notes that surgery requires significant recovery time and can leave permanent scars.

Many surgeons recommend reaching a stable weight and keeping it for at least three to six months before surgery. If that's your situation, a board-certified plastic surgeon is the right person to talk to.

If your goals go beyond what a non-surgical treatment can realistically deliver, we'll tell you that directly at your consultation.

Not sure what you need?

You don't have to figure it out alone. As Danielle puts it:

"A client shouldn't have to diagnose themselves based on something they saw on Instagram. 'I want to work on my stomach' could mean completely different things. Is it stubborn fat? Loose skin? Cellulite? Bloating or fluid retention? A combination?" Danielle DeLuca, MA

Frequently asked questions

Mainly how much weight you lost and how long the weight was there. How quickly you lost it, your age, genetics, sun exposure and smoking also affect how well your skin bounces back.

Does losing weight on Ozempic or Mounjaro cause loose skin?

Loose skin comes from the weight loss itself, especially when a large amount comes off quickly. Plastic surgeons have reported more patients asking about loose skin after large weight losses on GLP-1 medications, most often on the arms, abdomen and thighs.

Can you tighten loose skin without surgery?

For mild sagging, yes. Radiofrequency treatments like Venus Legacy use heat to increase collagen production. Large folds of excess skin are usually treated surgically.

How many Venus Legacy sessions will I need?

Most clients start with a course of 6 to 8 weekly sessions, followed by maintenance every 3 to 6 months.

Can I start Venus Legacy while I'm still losing weight?

Yes. Danielle recommends Venus Legacy for clients who are actively losing weight and whose main concern is loose skin.

Should I choose Laser Lipo or Venus Legacy?

Laser Lipo targets stubborn pockets of fat and inches. Venus Legacy targets loose skin, skin tightening and cellulite. Some clients benefit from both, depending on their body and goals.
